Final Reflection
I feel like I have really developed because of CAS. The most important thing about it to me is, that while some activities come naturally, for example I have been playing basketball regularly before I started doing CAS, others push you to do new things and constantly challenge yourself. The biggest challenge I had to overcome, I think, was interacting with kids in the Children’s Hospital of Warsaw Medical University. Since I am a rather shy person, this was a new thing for me at first, but it allowed me to make myself more open and outgoing.
What I enjoyed most about CAS is the Activity part, as I am a generally active person. I not only had fun during my regular basketball trainings, but also during the individual workouts at home or over the holidays. Also, the learning outcome number 5, “demonstrating the skills and recognizing the benefits of working collaboratively”, was the one I found the easiest to achieve, because as a team sport’s player I recognise the importance of collaboration and working together as a team.
During these eighteen months of CAS, I developed many new skills, but also polished some others. Since I was constantly training basketball, I feel that my playing skills have improved over this time. But I also enhanced my drawing and stencil making skills. I learned a bit of Hebrew and how to do handmade bracelets. Yet, most importantly, I think, I achieved better social skills through Service. I learned to overcome my shyness and to speak up, and I believe that CAS pushed me to do it and helped me get a bit out of my comfort zone, so I could grow even more.

CAS Project – Graffiti
During the final step of our CAS Project we painted our graffiti and stencil. We wanted our graffiti to be colourful, so we made several layers while painting the inscription. „Hold on Warsaw” was what we have written with the spray cans. Along with the mermaid wearing doctor’s gown this was supposed to maybe raise spirits in these difficult times and cheer up, even if a tiny bit, the ones passing our work. The artistic and creative part of our CAS Project was achieved and I hope the more social goal will also, at least partly, achieved and people will smile even for a few second while seeing this.

CAS Project – Graffiti
Before we went to spray paint our design, we had to make the mermaid stencil, as it is a more efficient way of portraying images different than letters while using spray paint. In order to make the stencil, we first had to sketch the project and then cut it out, so it would be good to put against a wall and paint. It is vital that while doing such stencil, the steps and what needs to be cut out is thoroughly planned, as some of the spaces need to be left uncut, acting as sorts of boarders between the coloured spaces.

Service – Animal Rights
During this meeting the topic of our discussion were grey wolves, especially their situation in Poland. After in the 1950s grey wolves were commonly hunted down for money their population has really plummeted, people started caring that they might go extinct in the 1980s in Poland. But it was not until 2001 that grey wolves in Poland went under a strict protection. Even though the population started to recover and there are more wolves now, and their situation is no longer critical, illegal huntings are still quite common. This matter is especially important, because we already came close once to ridding this country of grey wolves, and we should care more, so it does not happen again.

Service – Animal Rights
This time during our meeting we discussed over the issue of camels, specifically the wild Bactrian camel. This particular species is another critically endangered animal. Although they are closely related to the Bactrian camels, unlike their cousins, the wild Bactrian camels are on the edge of survival with only about a thousand individuals left. Apart from the natural threats those species have to face there is also the illegal camel hunting that seriously depletes their population. This is just one out of many similar cases and it is vital that the problem is acknowledged by more people.

CAS Project – Graffiti
Since the wall we have chosen as our canvas was already painted, we needed repaint it first. It is always a pity to cover someone else’s art, but the spaces where you can legally paint are only limited, so it is sometimes a necessity. After some time passes someone will probably also cover our graffiti. One day before we planned to paint with the spray cans we went to paint the wall grey, so our graffiti would be more visible and fresh looking.
